The Krishna conception of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

By Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj

When somebody asked Mahaprabhu in Puri, “You are preaching Krishna-nam, and I have made many explanations of Krishna-nam; You please hear them”, Mahaprabhu said, “No, I do not want to hear many explanations.”

prabhu kahe, “krishna-namera bahu artha na mani
‘syama-sundara’ ‘yasoda-nandana,’—ei-matra jani”

“I cannot tolerate many explanations of the Name of Krishna. Only that He is Syamasundar, Radha-Syamasundar, and He is  Yasoda Nandan, the son of Nanda Maharaj. Those two are sufficient for Me.” He wants to hear nothing else, from anybody. That is the expression of Mahaprabhu.

prabhu kahe, “krishna-namera bahu artha na mani
‘syama-sundara’ ‘yasoda-nandana,’—ei-matra jani”

“We want to know that He is Syamasundar and He is Yasoda Nandan.” This is His identity.

Mahaprabhu also asked Raghupati Upadhyaya, “What is the most beautiful form of Krishna?”

Upadhyaya said, “Syamam eva param rupam: Syamasundar is the supreme form.”

“What is the supreme land?”

He said, “Puri Madhu-puri vara: the supreme transcendental land is Mathura.” Inside of Mathura is Vrndavan. He told it in a wide way.

“What is the best age of the Lord?”

He said, “Vayah kaisorakam dhyeyam.” Kaisor, that is, from thirteen to fifteen.

“What is the supreme rasa that satisfies the Lord?”

He said, “Adya eva paro rasah: madhura rasa.” Adi-rasa means madhura-rasa, paramour conjugal love. That is the extreme.

Then Mahaprabhu happily told, “I learned from you now one sloka.”

syamam eva param rupam puri madhu-puri vara
vayah kaisorakam dhyeyam adya eva paro rasah
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta, Madhya-lila: 19.106)

[“The form of Syamasundar is the supreme form, the city of Mathura is the supreme abode, Lord Krishna’s fresh youth should always be meditated upon, and the mellow of conjugal love is the supreme mellow.”]
