acharyam mam vijaniyan navamanyeta karhichit
na martya-buddhyasuyeta sarva-deva-mayo guruh
(Srimad Bhagavatam: 11.17.27)

[Krishna says to Uddhava:] “Know Me to be the Acharya. Never disrespect him, consider him a mortal, or be envious of him. He is the embodiment of all the gods.”

adau sraddha tatah sadhu-sango ’tha bhajana-kriya
tato ’nartha-nivrittih syat tato nistha ruchis tatah
athasaktis tato bhavas tatah premabhyudanchati
sadhakanam ayam premnah pradurbhave bhavet kramah

(Sri Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu: Purva-vibhaga, 4.15–6)

“First sraddha, then sadhu-sanga, then bhajana-kriya, then anartha-nivritti, then nistha, then ruchi, then asakti, then bhava, and then prema arise. These are the stages in a practitioner’s prema arising.”

alabdhe va vinaste va bhaksyachchhadana-sadhane
aviklava-matir bhutva harim eva dhiya smaret
(Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu: Purva-vibhaga, 2.114)

“Even if you are unable to acquire food and shelter or your food and shelter are lost, with an undisturbed mind engage in remembrance of Lord Hari.”

ananyas chintayanto mam ye janah paryupasate
tesam nityabhiyuktanam yoga-ksemam vahamy aham
(Srimad Bhagavad-gita: 9.22)

“I supply and protect the necessities of those who meditate on Me exclusively, serve Me in all respects, and are always devoted to Me.”

api chet suduracharo bhajate mam ananya-bhak

sadhur eva sa mantavyah samyag vyavasito hi sah
(Srimad Bhagavad-gita: 9.30)

“If even very sinful persons serve Me exclusively with devotion, they should be regarded as saintly because their resolve is perfect.”

asadhu-sange bhai krsna-nama nahi haya

namaksara bahiraya bate tabu nama kabhu naya
(Sri Prema-vivarta: 7.1)

“Brother, the Name of Krishna never appears in bad association: the letters of the Name may appear, but the Name never does.”

aslisya va pada-ratam pinastu mam
adarsanan marma-hatam karotu va
yatha tatha va vidadhatu lampato
mat-prana-nathas tu sa eva naparah
(Sri Siksastakam: 8)

“That debauchee may tightly embrace this maidservant, or He may leave me and break my heart. He may do as He likes, but He alone is the Lord of my heart.”

atmendriya-priti-vanchha tare bali ‘kama’
krsnendriya-priti-ichchha dhare ‘prema’ nama
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta: Adi-lila, 4.165)

“The desire to gratify one’s own senses is called lust (kama). The desire to gratify Krishna’s senses is called love (prema).”

ayur harati vai pumsam udyann astam cha yann asau
tasyarte yat ksano nita uttamah-sloka-varttaya
(Srimad Bhagavatam: 2.3.17)

“Rising and setting, the revolving sun takes away the life of everyone except those who spend their time engaged in discussion of the Supreme Lord.”

bahu janma kare yadi sravana, kirtana
tabu ta’ na paya krsna-pade prema-dhana
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta: Adi-lila, 8.16)

“If you engage in hearing and chanting about the Lord for many births (but make offences), you will not attain the wealth of prema for Krishna’s feet.”

bhukti-mukti adi-vanchha yadi mane haya
sadhana karileo prema utpanna na haya
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta: Madhya-lila, 19. 175)

“If desires for enjoyment, liberation, and so forth remain in your heart, even if you engage in devotional practice, prema will not arise.”

brahmanda bhramite kona bhagyavan jiva
guru-krsna-prasade paya bhakti-lata-bija
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta: Madhya-lila, 19.151)

“While wandering throughout the world, a fortunate living being receives the seed of the creeper of devotion by the grace of Sri Guru and Krishna.

chari varnasrami yadi krsna nahi bhaje
svakarma karileo se raurave padi’ maje
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta: Madhya-lila, 22. 26)

“If followers of varnasram-dharma do not serve Krishna, then even though they perform their duties, they sink into hell.”

chintam kuryan na raksayair vikritasya yatha pasoh
tatharpayan harau deham viramedasya raksanat
(Sri Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu: Purva-vibhaga, 2.195)

“As one does not worry about the maintenance of a sold animal, so one will not worry about maintaining oneself upon fully offering one’s body unto the Supreme Lord.”

daivi hy esa guna-mayi mama maya duratyaya
mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti te
(Srimad Bhagavad-gita: 7.14)

“My alluring, trimodal maya is insurmountable. Only those who surrender unto Me can cross over maya.”

devarsi-bhutapta-nrnam pitrnam
na kinkaro nayam rni cha rajan
sarvatmana yah saranam saranyam
gato mukundam parihrtya kartam
(Srimad Bhagavatam: 11.5.41)

“Those who have completely abandoned all worldly duties and surrendered wholeheartedly unto the ultimate shelter, Mukunda, are no longer debtors to, nor servants of, the gods, the sages, other living beings, relatives, mankind, or the ancestors.”

dharmah projjhita-kaitavo ’tra paramo nirmatsaranam satam
vedyam vastavam atra vastu sivadam tapa-trayonmulanam
srimad-bhagavate mahamuni-krite kim vaparair isvarah
sadyo hridy avarudhyate ’tra kritibhih susrusubhis tat-ksanat
(Srimad Bhagavatam: 1.1.2)

“Here, the highest dharma, in which cheating is utterly rejected, is given for the sadhus who are free from envy. Here, can be known the Absolute Truth, which reveals the highest good and uproots the three miseries. What need is there of any other scripture than this Srimad Bhagavatam compiled by the best of the sages? Here, the Lord is immediately bound within the heart by the fortunate souls who desire to listen to it from the moment they begin.”

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta: Antya-lila, 4.192)

“At the time of initiation, devotees fully surrender themselves, and at that time Krishna accepts them as His own.”

durdaive sevaka yadi yaya anya sthane
sei thakura dhanya tare chule dhari’ ane
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta: Antya-lila, 4.47)

“If, by misfortune, a servant goes elsewhere, glorious is the master who brings them back, pulling them by the hair.”

pita na sa syaj janani na sa syat
daivam na tat syan na patis cha sa syan
na mochayed yah samupeta-mrtyum
(Srimad Bhagavatam: 5.5.18)

“That guru is no guru, that relative is no relative, that father is no father, that mother is no mother, that god is no god, and that husband is no husband who cannot save you from imminent death. [Any so-called guru, relative, father, mother, god or husband who cannot save you from imminent death should be abandoned at once.]”

“The living being is by nature an eternal servant of Krishna. The living being is Krishna’s marginal energy and is a manifestation both different and non-different from Krishna.”

durdantendriya-kala-sarpa-patali protkhata-damstrayate
visvam purna-sukhayate vidhi-mahendradis cha kitayate
yat-karunya-kataksa-vaibhavavatam tam gauram eva stumah
(Sri Chaitanya-chandramrta: 5)

“For the fortunate souls who have received His merciful sidelong glance, merging into Brahman seems hellish, the abode of the gods seems phantasmagorical, the uncontrollable senses become like defanged poisonous serpents, the world is felt to be full of joy, and Brahma, Indra, and the other gods seem like insects. Let us glorify Sri Gaura.”

‘ke ami’, ‘kene amaya jare tapa-traya’
iha nahi jani—‘kemane hita haya’
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta: Madhya-lila, 20.102)

“Who am I? Why do the three miseries afflict me? I cannot understand this. How can I be benefitted?”

krsna-bahirmukha hana bhoga-vanchha kare
nikata-stha maya tare japatiya dhare
(Sri Prema-vivarta: 6.2)

“When living beings become averse to Krishna and desire enjoyment, nearby Maya seizes them.”

krsna-bhakta—niskama, ataeva ‘santa’
bhukti-mukti-siddhi-kami—sakali ‘asanta’
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta: Madhya-lila, 19. 149)

“Those who desire enjoyment, liberation, or supernatural power are disturbed. Devotees of Krishna are free from such desires and thus peaceful.”

krsna bhuli’ sei jiva anadi-bahirmukha
ataeva maya tare deya samsaradi-duhkha
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta: Madhya-lila, 20.117)

“When living beings become averse to Krishna prior to contact with material existence and forget Him, Maya subjects them to the various miseries of material existence.”

‘krsna-nitya-dasa’—jiva taha bhuli’ gela
ei dose maya tara galaya bandhila
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta: Madhya-lila, 22.24)

“Living beings have forgotten that they are eternal servants of Krishna. For this mistake, Maya binds them by the neck.”

krsna-surya-sama; maya haya andhakara
yaha krsna taha nahi mayara adhikara
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta: Madhya-lila, 22.31)

“Krishna is like the sun and Maya is like darkness. Wherever Krishna is present, Maya has no position.”

krsna yadi chhute bhakte bhukti mukti diya
kabhu prema-bhakti na dena rakhena lukaiya
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta: Adi-lila, 8.18)

“When Krishna evades a devotee, He gives them enjoyment or liberation. He keeps loving devotion hidden and does not give it to them.”

ksipram bhavati dharmatma sasvach-chhantim nigachchhati

kaunteya pratijanihi na me bhaktah pranasyati
(Srimad Bhagavad-gita: 9.31)

“They swiftly become persons of virtuous practices and attain constant peace. O Arjuna, declare to the world that My devotee is never vanquished!”

mahat-krpa vina kona karme ‘bhakti’ naya
krsna-bhakti dure rahu, samsara nahe ksaya
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta: Madhya-lila, 22.51)

“Without the mercy of a great soul, none of one’s actions are devotion, devotion for Krishna remains far away, and one’s worldly conditioning is not destroyed.”

mayare kariya jaya chhadana na yaya
sadhu-krpa vina ara nahika upaya
(Prarthana: 46.4)

“It is impossible to overcome and give up maya without the mercy of the sadhus. There is no other way.”

na rarajodupas chhannah sva-jyotsna-rajitair ghanaih
aham-matya bhasitaya sva-bhasa puruso yatha
(Srimad Bhagavatam: 10.20.19)

“When covered by clouds that are manifest by its own light, the moon does not shine. Similarly, when covered by the ego that is manifest its own light, the soul does not shine.”

“When someone is possessed by a ghost, they become bewildered. This condition overtakes living beings bound by Maya.”

sadhavo hrdayam mahyam sadhunam hrdayam tv aham
mad-anyat te na jananti naham tebhyo manag api
(Srimad Bhagavatam: 9.4.68)

[Visnu instructs Durvasa:] “Sadhus are My heart, and I alone am their heart. They do not know anyone other than Me, and I do not know anyone other than them.”

sadhu-sanga, nama-kirtana, bhagavata-sravana
mathura-vasa, sri-murtira sraddhaya sevana
sakala-sadhana-srestha ei pancha anga
krsna-prema janmaya ei pachera alpa sanga
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta: Madhya-lila, 22.124–5)

“Association with the sadhus, chanting the Name, hearing Srimad Bhagavatam, residing in Mathura, and serving the Deity with faith—these five are the best of all the limbs of devotional practice. Divine love for Krishna develops from even slight participation in these five limbs.”

“I want only to chant the Name of Krishna in the association of the sadhu. There is no other way to conquer samsara.”

“I do not know how to enquire about the goal or the path. Please explain all these truths to me.”

[Sriman Mahaprabhu:] “Sanatan, if I could attain Krishna by giving up the body, then I would give up millions of bodies in a moment.”

aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami ma suchah
(Srimad Bhagavad-gita: 18.66)

“Abandon all duties and surrender to Me alone. I will liberate you from all sin. Do not despair.”

se dekhite paya yara akhi niramala
andhibhuta chaksu yara visaya dhulite
ki-rupe se para-tattva paibe dekhite

“Those whose eyes are pure can see Krishna’s form shining everywhere. How can those whose eyes are blinded by the dust of mundanity ever see that higher truth?”

satam prasangan mama virya-samvido
bhavanti hrt-karna-rasayanah kathah
taj-josanad asv apavarga-vartmani
sraddha ratir bhaktir anukramisyati
(Srimad Bhagavatam: 3.25.25)

“In advanced association with the sadhus, discussions become full perceptions of My Pastimes and elixirs for the heart and the ears. By cherishing them, faith, attachment, and devotion to Me—the path to liberation—quickly develop.”

‘sraddha’-sabde—visvasa kahe sudrdha nischaya
krsne bhakti kaile sarva-karma krta haya
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta: Madhya-lila, 22.62)

“Sraddha means firm, confident faith that all duties are performed if one serves Krishna.”

sraddhavan jana haya bhakti-adhikari
‘uttama’, ‘madhyama’, ‘kanistha’—sraddha-anusari
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta: Madhya-lila, 22.64)

“Those who have sraddha are qualified for devotion. According to their sraddha, they may be advanced devotees, intermediate devotees, or beginner devotees.”

“Consider the mercy of Sri Krishna Chaitanya! If you do so, your heart will be struck with wonder!”

“The Supreme Lord Hari is present in the hearts of His dear devotees who reject all other concerns and serve His lotus feet, and He purifies any sin they happen to commit.”

(Srimad Bhagavad-gita: 4.34)

“Learn the truth through surrender, sincere enquiry, and service. One who both knows and sees the truth will impart it to you.”

tate krsna bhaje, kare gurura sevana
maya-jala chhute, paya krsnera charana
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta: Madhya-lila, 22.25)

“Therefore, living beings that worship Krishna and serve Sri Guru escape Maya’s net and reach Krishna’s feet.”

tato duhsangam utsrjya satsu sajjeta buddhi-man
santa evasya chhindanti mano-vyasangam uktibhih
(Srimad Bhagavatam: 11.26.26)

“An intelligent person should abandon bad association and associate with sadhus. Sadhus cut away one’s unfavourable desires with their instructions.”

tavat karmani kurvita na nirvidyeta yavat
mat-katha-sravanadau va sraddha yavan na jayate
(Srimad Bhagavatam: 11.20.9)

“People should engage in their worldly duties so long as they have not become detached from worldly life and have not developed faith in hearing discussion of Me.”

yajnarthat karmano ’nyatra loko ’yam karma-bandhanah
tad-artham karma kaunteya mukta-sangah samachara
(Srimad Bhagavad-gita: 3.9)

“Without action for the sake of sacrifice (the Lord), living beings become bound by their actions. O Arjuna, perform action free from attachment for the sake of sacrifice.”

yajna-sistasinah santo muchyante sarva-kilbisaih
bhunjate te tv agham papa ye pachanty atma-karanat
(Srimad Bhagavad-gita: 3.13)

“Sadhus who subsist on the remnants of sacrifice are freed from all sin. Sinners who cook for themselves, however, partake only of sin.”

yasya nahankrito bhavo buddhir yasya na lipyate
hatvapi sa imal lokan na hanti na nibadhyate
(Srimad Bhagavad-gita: 18.17)

“Someone who is free from false ego and whose mind is not entangled (in the mundane) neither kills nor becomes bound (by action), even if they destroy the entire world.”

krsna-bhajane nahi jati-kuladi-vichara
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta: Antya-lila, 4.67)

“Anyone who serves Krishna is great. Non-devotees are lowly and fallen. Within devotion for Krishna, there is no consideration of caste, class, or anything of the sort.”

mama vartmanuvartante manusyah partha sarvasah
(Srimad Bhagavad-gita: 4.11)

“As all surrender unto Me, I reward them accordingly. All people follows My path in all respects, O Arjuna.”
